A Waltham Mantel Clock with Two Sevens on the Dial!

Here are photos of a Waltham mantel clock, probably from the 1920’s. The size is

  • Height: 6 1/2 inches
  • Width of base: 12 inches
  • Depth of base: 4 inches

The unusual dial has two numeral sevens! In addition to the seven in its correct location, there is a seven where the six should be! The owner is curious about the dial.

I could not find this clock in any of my catalogs. If anyone has a picture of this clock model, does it have the same mistake in the dial? Does anybody have an explanation for this dial?

  1. I think I may have found a clue that might help you guys out. I came across your page while looking for a “clock with two sevens” on google. My curiosity for such a clock was spurned by a wikipedia article I just read on the Athenaeum Club in London. In this article it says “The club’s facilities include a dining room, a smoking room and a suite of bedrooms. A notable feature of the Club’s clock which hangs above the stairs is that it has two figure sevens and no figure eight, the reason for which is uncertain.”

I wouldn’t be suprised if such a club gave keepsakes out that include some of the club’s symbols or lore. But then again, I know nothing about clocks. I figured it was worth a mention for your sake though.

  2. I have a Waltham clock that is brass. It is a windup mantel clock (no chimes) and has two figures on each side of the clock. The clock is about 14″ high. I have been told that it is at least 100 years old. I also was told it is a “coach clock”. Can anyone give me some information about it?
