Schatz Diamond Dial 400 Day Clock, 1953

By on May 31, 2011

This beautiful Schatz 400 day clock with diamond-shaped dial is dated 6 53 (June 1953) on the movement. I overhauled the movement; and polished and lacquered the base, pillars, platform, finials and pendulum.

I installed a new suspension unit 6789. The movement is classified as Horolovar back plate no. 1281.

Seth Thomas Green and Black Adamantine Mantel Clock, Rear Escapement

By on May 30, 2011

This beautiful Seth Thomas green and black Adamantine mantel clock has the older type of movement with rear escapement. See my clockhistory.com web site for some history of Seth Thomas Adamantine clocks. This clock is 11 3/8 inches wide and 12 1/2 inches tall. The dial is not original, and has a 4 1/4 inch minute track.

The time click was broken in two when this clock came in for repair. The strike click was a previous replacement that was located incorrectly. I installed two new clicks, and the original wire clicksprings were in good condition. I also polished the pivots, installed 12 bushings, and replaced the wires in the escape wheel pinion.

The mainsprings appeared original, the time spring measuring 11/16 x 0.0175 inch, and the strike spring measuring 11/16 by 0.0183 inch. They were in good condition and so were retained in the clock. If they needed replacing, I would have used thinner ones, 0.0165 inch thick.

Ansonia Porcelain Cased Mantel Clock

By on May 28, 2011

I recently repaired this pretty clock. The back of the case is labeled:

PORCELAIN
Dresden
8-Day Hour and Half Hour
Cathedral Bell Strike
Manufactured Expressly For
The American Wringer Co
No 99 Chambers Street
New York
No. D-. 363

The number 363 is hand written.

The movement is Ansonia’s efficient running 8 day time and strike with the original thin mainsprings.

Time Mainspring: 3/4 x 0.0157 inch loop end

Strike Mainspring: 3/4 x 0.0153 inch loop end

I polished the pivots, installed 11 bushings, replaced the click rivets (so the winding mechanism will be reliable), installed new wires in one pinion, and made and installed new return springs on the hammer and count lever.

Sessions Oak Kitchen (Shelf) Clock, 1920s – 1930s

By on May 27, 2011

This Sessions oak kitchen or shelf clock may have been made in the 1920s or 1930s. The case form has been simplified from earlier models. The label on the back says at the top:

Superior Assortment
Manufactured by
The Sessions Clock Co.,
Forestville, Conn, U. S. A.
Eight Day Half Hour Strike

A metal plate inside the clock says:

Sensenbrenner’s
“Watch Shop”
Circleville, Ohio

This clock has the usual Sessions 8-day time and strike movement. The pivots were rough, so I polished them. I replaced the brass wire click springs with steel wire for reliability.

The time mainspring was a replacement that was too strong. The end was labeled “Usibel France”. It was 3/4 inches wide by 0.018 inch thick. I replaced it with a mainspring 3/4 x 0.0165 by 96 inches from R & M Imports. The original strike mainspring of 3/4 by 0.0177 inch was retained in the clock.

Gilbert Tambour Mantel Clock with Oval Dial, 1928

By on May 26, 2011

This Gilbert tambour mantel clock is unusual in that the dial is oval instead of round. The clock looks as though a clock with a round dial was stretched vertically! The overall height is 10 1/8 inches, and the width is 20 inches. The dial’s minute track is 6 5/8 inches tall and 5 3/16 inches wide. The minute hand is 2 5/8 inches long, center to tip. The movement has date code 28 (1928) in the back. The clock strikes bim-bam on the hour and strikes a single rod once on the half-hour.

Most of the pivot holes have been punched by a previous repairer in a poor attempt to close them (punched on both sides of the plate!). I installed brass bushings to create smooth bearings once again. The canon pinion had developed a crack in the past and had been soldered on. I drilled a hole through the pinion and arbor and inserted a steel pin to ensure that the pinion stays in place. The gear that drives the count wheel was loose on the second wheel arbor, I used Locktite to secure it.

Both mainsprings were original, 3/4 inch wide by 0.0173 inch thick with loop ends. They had a squeaky action during winding, so I replaced them. The original springs had special ends which allowed removing them without movement disassembly.

Time mainspring: 3/4 x 0.0165 x 120 inches, Timesavers 15959

Strike mainspring: 3/4 x 0.0168 x 120 inches, Timesavers 15959

The mainspring arbor hooks on the mainwheels were very tall, so I shortened them, to reduce the danger of mainspring breakage.

Sessions “Stratford” Tambour Mantel Clock

By on May 25, 2011

This Sessions tambour mantel clock is named “Stratford” on the label inside the rear door. The case is 21 5/16 inches wide and 9 3/8 inches tall. The aluminum dial with embossed numerals has a 5 1/4 inch time track. The label has the date 11 – 39 (November 1939) stamped in ink.

I did only a partial repair on this clock, per customer request. I disassembled and cleaned it, and replaced the click rivets (the time click had come completely off the mainwheel, allowing the mainspring to unwind. I also replaced the brass wire clicksprings with steel wire for greater reliability (the old brass ones often fail).

This clock has stronger mainsprings than necessary (both 3/4 inch wide by 0.018 inch thick). They hadn’t caused much mainwheel tooth wear yet, but are fairly hard to wind. If I were doing a full overhaul I’d be tempted to replace them with 3/4 x 0.0165 by 120 inch or 96 inch long springs. The 120 inch springs cost a bit more, but will help the clock to keep more consistent time as it runs down.

Schatz Standard 400 Day Clock with Clear Leveling Discs

By on May 24, 2011

This Schatz standard 400 day clock is dated 12 54 (December 1954) on the back of the movement. It has a beautiful silvered brass dial with engraved and filled numerals, minute track, and decorative patterns.

The unusual feature of this clock is that it has clear leveling discs in the base. Usually they are brass, or plastic that looks like brass.

The movement is Horolovar backplate no. 1014A. Dated 12 54 (December 1954).

Ansonia “Sharon” Cabinet Clock

By on May 23, 2011

This Ansonia “Sharon” cabinet clock has an oak case, an enamel dial, and an 8-day time and strike movement. The case has a top piece that isn’t shown here. The height of the clock (as illustrated without the top piece) is 14 1/4 inches. It is 13 5/8 inches wide, and the enamel dial has a 4 1/4 inch minute track.

This clock is shown in the Ansonia 1894 catalog having a metal dial. The height is given as 17 inches. The list price was $7.50.

The movement is labeled on the back:

ANSONIA CLOCK CO.
USA
NEW YORK

5 1/5

PATENTED
JUNE 18, 1882

I didn’t do a full repair job on this clock. I disassembled the movement, cleaned it, and replaced the broken time mainspring. I installed a 3/4 by 0.0167 by 120 inch mainspring, Timesavers part no. 15959. If I had done a general service and repair, including pivot polishing and bushings, I would have installed an even thinner spring, about 0.0145 inch thick. The original strike mainspring is 0.0155 inch thick.

See more photos.

Repair job 5353.

Note: Shortly after the customer took this clock home, the orignal strike mainspring broke. I replaced it with the same type spring as I used for the time mainspring (3/4 x 0.0165 x 120″ Timesavers or R & M type). If I had done a complete repair, I would have used a thinner mainspring, about 0.0155 inch thick.
