Gilbert Drop Octagon Clock in Oak Case

This style of clock is often called a “Schoolhouse” clock. This clock’s maker is Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Company, Winsted, Connecticut. The clock keeps time only (no striking) and is made to be wound up every week (typically called an “8 Day, although it will run for 10 days or more on one winding).

This was a popular style of clock and was made for years. Tran Duy Ly’s Gilbert Clocks book gives the year as 1910  and says this model is called “Admiral.”

Height: 27 5/16 inches

Width: 17 3/4 inches

Minute hand: 5 3/8 inches from tip to center.

Dial: The paper face is a replacement. The clock may have had Roman numerals originally.

Repair job 6273. I polished the pivots and installed 7 bushings. The original mainspring is 0.171 inch thick and 3/4 inch wide with a loop on the outer end. I like the appearance of this Gilbert time-only movement, the plates have a nice, symmetrical shape.
