Here is a Seth Thomas antique oak “kitchen” clock that came into my shop. I did only minor adjustments to it per customer request, but it will need overhauling in the future as there are worn pivot holes. There are lots of these clocks around, and I am showing this one because it has a nice label on the back and a date code.
The label is No. 298A, used on many clocks of this time, and doesn’t indicate the clock’s model number or name. The label gives directions for the clock, and advertises the Seth Thomas pocket watch with movement No. 260.
The date code on the back is 1912G, which means July 1912. The letter stands for the month, where A is January, B is February, etc. Many clocks have the year digits stamped in reverse order, but this one has them in forward order for some reason.
This clock is very similar to the “College Series – New York” shown in Tran Duy Ly’s book “Seth Thomas Clocks and Movements”, but the base and door glass pattern are different. It has an 8-day time and strike movement. The movement model is 89D, 89E or 89F (the letter was stamped several times).

Yes, this should be a date of January 1965.
Hello – I have a Seth Thomas banjo clock (Brookline 6W) with what seems like a date code but there is no letter suffix, only a 4 digit code – 6501. Did Seth Thomas, Talley Industries, or General Time use a 4 digit code (without any letter code) to ID any of the Seth Thomas clocks dates of origin? Thanks in advance.
I have the same clock and am looking for parts.
I need the spring for the alarm wind up.
Any tips on where I can get these parts?
I have a Seth Thomas Kitchen Clock that I am searching for parts for and someone to fix it. It needs a lot of work but I know I need the pendulum, the bob and the wiring to connect to the side bell. I would like to send pictures if you could give me an address
The 1981B is the date code. The year is backward, and the letter is the month. So, this clock was made February 1891.
I inherited a Seth Thomas gingerbread clock last weekend from my Grandmother. The back is stamped 1981B. Could you give me some insight on its history and approximate age? I was told it is about 200 years old but I’m thinking it’s not quite that old.
Kindly, Nicole
I have a Seth Thomas Oak Kitchen Clock 8 day half hour strike movement No. 298A Date Code 1913 F. What is it worth ?
I repaired this clock for a customer, so it isn’t for sale. Sorry!
Whats the price of this clock?
I have a similar oak kitchen clock given to me by my Grandmother as shown in the top two photos. According to research, the date of manufacture is reverse stamped. Mine had 3981 F, meaning it was manufactured in February 1893.
I have a seth thomas clock i can see the macanical works it say Thomaston conn on it face
I don’t give values, as they are too variable. You can see what similar clocks are selling for on eBay. For a clock of this type, the repair cost for an overhaul usually exceeds its current market value. Detail of our repair service are on the following web page: https://billsclockworks.com/repair/sethThomas/index.html
I have what appears to be this same clock. The label on the back of mine only has the center portion with the instructions and it says No. 298. Is there a difference between the 298 and the 298A? I know nothing about the clock so I am looking for any information. Is there value to the clock beyond it’s sentimental value?
The method in the video will work in this case also, just repeat it until the striking is correct.
Bill, I am sorry I wasn’t very clear. The clock is striking the correct hour but does it on the half hour at the 6 position. At the 12 position it only strikes once. So basically it is striking the correct hour a half hour late. Thank you for taking the time to help me. I really appreciate it.

Bill, thank you. Yes It is an alarm. Now I have a problem. The clock kept good time and chimed correctly until last week. It stopped about 1 minute to the hour. So I wound the clock. It is still keeping good time, but is chiming the hour at the half hour. How can I reset it to chime correctly?
The extra works may be the alarm. The disc in the middle of the dial is for setting the alarm time, turn the disc so that the time you want it to ring is beneath the hour hand.
I have what appears to be this same clock, same case, same glass, but a different pendulum and additional clock works to the right side of the pendulum. I am wondering if you could give me additional info. I would be happy to supply pictures.
Hi
My wife inherited this clock from her father. The clock has a lot of sentimental value and history from her fathers childhood. That being said, we were never provided the key to wind this clock. After several attempts to purchase a key, I have not found one to fit. Can you please let me know what size key fits this clock, and where I might purchase it?
Thanks for any help you could provide.
Mike
