Gilbert “Elia” Walnut shelf Clock ca. 1890

Here’s a nice old Gilbert shelf clock I repaired, made by the Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co., Winsted, Conn. It was made around 1890, and has an 8-day time and strike movement. The clock is 21 inches tall and 12 inches wide. The paper face is a replacement.

It has the original label on the back with the model and company name, and some repair dates.

Repair job 6684. I polished the pivots and installed 16 bushings. The original 0.018 inch thick time mainspring was causing wear to the mainwheel teeth, so I installed the following new mainspring:

  • Time: 3/4 x 00185 x 120 inches, R & M Imports # 77.303

I replaced the bushings that a previous repairer had installed, as they were too short. I replaces the wires in 3 pinions, and reversed the wires in one pinion. I made and installed new click rivets.

  1. Hello,

I may have spoken to you before. I have a Gilbert “Elia” clock with a missing top center piece, and the trim piece on the right top.

Looking for a source of pictures or tracings of the top piece with hopes of having a replacement made. Have you a known party that could provide scaled pictures or tracing ?
