Instructions for Quad and Rhythm Battery Chiming Clock Movements

The “Quad” and “Rhythm” battery operated chime clock movements have a tubular bell sound and can play Westminster or Ave Marie chimes; or Bim-Bam strike. They use two “C” cells, and look like this:

Note on Some Rhythm Movements

Some Rhythm movements start out striking 1 (instead of 6) when the batteries are first put in. If this is the case and your clock is striking the wrong hour, push the “Set” button  to correct it. Each time you push “Set”, the striking advances one hour. Push the “Monitor” button to hear the hour that the clock thinks it is.

Quick Setting Instructions

  • Take the power cells out of the clock;
  • Set the hands forward to 5:45;
  • Insert the power cells, + end down (use alkaline cells);
  • Note: When setting the hands, use the minute (long) hand, or use the knob on the back of the movement. Only turn the hands forward (clockwise);
  • Move the hands forward to 6:05; the clock will chime, then strike 6;
  • The hands are now showing 6:05 a.m. Move the hands forward to the correct time.

Full Instructions

  • Take the power cells out of the clock (if they are in);
  • Set the hands forward to 5:45;
  • Insert the power cells, + end down (use alkaline cells);
  • Note: When setting the hands, use the minute (long) hand, or use the knob on the back of the movement. Only turn the hands forward (clockwise);
  • Move the hands forward to 6:05; the clock will chime, then strike 6;
  • Choose the melody you wish the movement to play (4X4 Westminster, 4X4 Ave Marie, Westminster, Bim-Bam or Gong). Note: when in a 4X4 mode it will chime each quarter-hour;
  • The hands are now showing 6:05 a.m. Move the hands forward to the correct time;
  • When in 4X4 mode, it may take a complete hour for the chime to synchronize after setting;
  • If you want the sound off at night, set the sound lever (on back right hand side) to the up position (Night off). The sound will be off from 11 p.m. to 5:45 a.m.
  • Set the sound lever to “24 Hour” (middle position) for the clock to play the sound all 24 hours each day;
  • The “Monitor” button demonstrates the hourly chime.
  • The “Set” button advances the strike one hour (use if the clock is striking the wrong hour).
  • The volume control on back adjusts the sound louder or quieter.

Note: If the clock is chiming and the chime ends abruptly, install new power cells.

  3. I’m using a new Quad Chiming Movement in an old case. The clock keeps accurate time, but the pendulum keeps stopping. Ideas?

  4. Bill it’s Carol again, when I took the batteries out the first time to wait one hour for the correct time, I said that part wrong.. it did chime every 15 minutes, but on the hour the chimes were wrong. That’s when I took the batteries out again and did that 5:45 deal. Then it won’t chime every 15 minutes. Only on the hour.

  5. Hi Bill, I’m Carol, I have a Quad and Rhythm battery operated clock. I needed to set the clock back an hour because of time change, I took out the batteries and waited an hour then put them back in so then it would be with the correct time. I have it set to chime every 15 minutes. Well it did but, on the hour, let’s say 11am it chimed 7 times after the music…at 12 chimed 8 times, and so on. So I took out the batteries set clock to 5:45, put them back, then 6:05. Then I moved minute hand back to pm and to the right time. Everything is working right.. I have it to cut off from 11 to 6, the chimes are chiming right on the hour…but it Only chimes on the hour, Not every 15 minutes! I checked the back to make sure it was on the Westminster 4x. I don’t know if it has to reset itself? It’s been about 11 hours ago. Please help me figure this out. Thanks!

  6. is there a place online where I can actually hear a Rhythm Battery Chiming Clock Movement before I buy one?

    some chiming clocks sound terrible!

    thanks!

  7. Ron, if the hour is wrong, grasp the hour hand at the center and turn it to point to the hour that the clock is chiming. Then set the hands forward to the current time.

  8. Hello Bill. I have a Howard Miller battery operated mantel clock without any instructions. Can you advise me on how to set the chimes so they align with the time. Currently, since changing the time to be one hour earlier due to going back to standard time, the chimes are out of sync.

  9. Model # 4MH835

    I put different sets of brand new batteries size D, sunbeam non mercury I have always used these in the past.
    I did switch to Duracell and energizer and still the same problem but switched back.

    Per our conversation – I took the batteries out, held the reset button for 10 seconds, put the batteries back in and pressed the reset button again, then also turned the switch on the side to off and back on.

    Thank you very much.

    Hello Mrs. Myers,

    Let me ask when looking at the battery terminals do you see any residue on them? If not, let me recommend going to a Dollar or 99 cent store and get some Heavy Duty batteries which are non-alkaline and give me a call at 770-640-6311. I will do some troubleshooting with you.

    I have a small world rhythm clock that does not keep time. It started out by losing time but now it does not keep time at all. When I set the time, it goes no where. The spinning pendulum that holds four crystals still spins. I have changed the batteries from energizer to Duracell and it still does not work. I have reset it several times using the buttons on the side. Any suggestions ?

  10. The initial setting is a.m. You can move the hands ahead to noon, then you are in the p.m. (or push the SET button 12 times to get to 6 p.m. if you are setting the clock in the evening).

  11. When going through the initial set up, for 5:45.. then move hands to 6:05… is that AM or PM for the initial setting? wondering because i want to use the feature the for no chiming at night time… or will i have to advance through with the SET button to move it forward?

  12. In changing batteries the time/chime went out of sinc.Chimes 5 minutes after strike on both hour and half hour.I only use the bong chime.No music.
