Kundo Miniature Painted 400 Day Clock

By on June 30, 2011

This pretty little Kundo 400 day clock is 8 7/16 inches tall without the dome. The ivory color base and pillars have flowers painted on them. It was made in the 1950s.

The movement is Horolovar back plate no. 1381, and I installed a 0.0024 inch thick Horolovar suspension spring (the 0.0023 inch springs I have now are slightly thinner than 0.0023 inch and make the clock lose time).

Waterbury Oak Shelf Clock with Steel Plate Movement

By on June 27, 2011

This Waterbury oak cased shelf (kitchen) clock was made around 1903 and is called “Amherst”. It is 21 3/4 inches tall (a small piece is is missing at the top, it should be 22 inches tall) and 15 inches wide. The hands are original Waterbury blackened brass Maltese style. The minute hand is 2 9/16 inches long from center to tip. The paper dial of this clock is original but worn.

The movement plates are 5 inches tall and 3 7/16 inches wide, and marked 5 3/8 (referring to the length of the pendulum). This movement is designed to use thin loop end mainsprings 3/4 inch wide. When the clock came into the shop, it had a strike mainspring 0.0142 inch thick, and a time mainspring 0 .0172 inch thick. The thicker time mainspring has caused significant wear to the time mainwheel teeth (the teeth on the time mainwheel are 20 % worn, which the strike mainwheel teeth are only 5% worn). The springs were slightly rusty, and I replaced them with Merritt’s Antiques part number P-1496 in the red and yellow package. I selected a spring 0.0156 inch thick for the striking, and 0.0158 inch thick for the time. The pendulum motion is excellent and the striking speed could actually be slower and still be reliable.

This was one of the most badly worn clock movements I have seen! It was very dirty when received. All of the pinion wires needed replacing. The pinion wires of the fan fly were over half way worn through! The movement must have been sprayed with something to keep it going without being cleaned for many years, and the dust adhering to the gear teeth acted as an abrasive, causing the wear to the pinions). All of the pivots needed polishing, and I installed 12 bushings. The pallets had deep wear grooves which I polished out.

The movement plates are steel (with brass plating for decoration), and brass bushings (they were made like this instead of solid brass for a few years – Gilbert also made some like this, so did Ingraham but  without the brass bushings!).

Seth Thomas Cottage Clock, Late Model

By on June 23, 2011

Cottage clocks (small simple spring driven shelf clocks) were popular starting around the 1850s. This is a much newer one, using the Seth Thomas no. 89A movement, and was probably made around the 1920s. The 89A movement is a variation on the basic no. 89 used in many Seth Thomas Adamantine mantel clocks. This clock has a veneered case that is 13 inches tall, 9 1/4 inches wide at the base, with a 5 1/2 inch dial (the dial is a replacement paper dial). It is interesting that they veneered the rear of the case as well! The pendulum bob is 2 13/16 inches in diameter.

This movement has the feature of stopworks (2 extra gears on the left and right of the front plate to limit the range of operation of the mainsprings).

This movement has about 35% wear on the time and strike mainwheel teeth, even though the mainsprings are not outrageously strong. The mainsprings are original, the time spring being around 0.0165 – 0.0172 inch thick, and the strike spring about 0.0172 inch thick. The movement needed many bushings, and most of the pivots needed polishing.

Suspension Springs for Schatz and Kundo Miniature 400 Day Clocks

By on June 11, 2011

On several previous posts, I noted that some Schatz miniature 400 day clocks (model 53 movement) needed a 0.0024 inch thick suspension spring (whereas the Horolovar 400 Day Clock Repair Guide specifies a 0.0023 inch spring).

I just experienced this again – this week I repaired a Schatz “London Coach” 400 day clock (which has the model 53 movement). The clock ran too slow with a Horolovar 0.0023 inch spring. With a 0.0024 inch spring, it keeps good time.

I measured the thickness of the 0.0023 inch springs, and they are closer to 0.0022 inch thick. It may be that a batch of springs were made too thin, or were mislabeled.

I experienced the same thing with a Kundo miniature 400 day clock this week.  With a “0.0023 inch” spring, It needed to have the pendulum regulated almost all the way toward fast to get the clock to keep time. A 0.024 inch spring allowed the clock to keep good time with the regulator near the center of its adjustment.

Conclusion: if a Kundo or Schatz niniature 400 day clock loses time with a 0.023 inch Horolovar suspension spring, install a 0.0024 inch spring.

Schatz Standard 400 Day Clock with “Holey” Dome

By on June 10, 2011

This Schtaz standard size 400 day clock was made in August 1952. It has a special glass dome with a hole in the top for the handle to protrude. The handle has a spring loaded brass dust washer which the dome presses down slightly when it is set in place. The dome is 5 1/2 inches in diameter, 9 3/8 inches tall, with a 1 inch diameter hole. The hole in the dome should have a brass trim washer around it, which is missing on this dome.

The movement on this clock is unusual. It has one jewel bearing in the front plate (for the anchor). Most standard 400 day clocks have no jewels (however, the Schatz miniature 53 movement always has 2 jewels). There were a few 2-jewel standard Schatz movements, but this is the first I’ve heard of with one jewel!

The movement is characterized as Horolovar back plate no. 1281. The date code is 8 52.

Schatz Silver Dial 400 Day Clock, 1954

By on June 8, 2011

I recently repaired the Schatz standard 400 day clock with round silver dial (silver plated brass with engraved numerals and decorations). The movement has the date code 10 54 (October 1954) on the back.

Repairs included straightening one bent pivot, polishing the pivots, installing a new suspension spring and lower suspension block. This movement is classified as Horolovar back plate no. 1014A

Kundo Nickel Plated 400 Day Clock, 1950s

By on June 7, 2011

This pretty and unusual Kundo standard 400 day clock has the case parts and movement plates nickel plated. This clock has the unusual square dial. It was made in the early 1950s.

I overhauled the movement. A previous repairer had badly damaged the anchor and escape wheel, so I installed replacement parts, polished the pivots, and installed a new suspension spring and lower suspension block.
