Seth Thomas Legacy 2W Chiming Mantel Clock

Here is a Seth Thomas “Legacy 2W” chiming mantel clock I repaired recently. The 1949 Seth Thomas clock catalog shows this clock on page 10. It has a mahogany case, is 14 1/2 tall and 10 11/16 inches wide, and the minute hand is 2 7/8 inches long. The dial’s silvered brass chapter ring has etched numerals and markings that are filled with black. It plays Westminster chime on all four quarters and also strikes the number of the hour.

The date on the instruction label (inside the back door) is 4713 (13th lunar month of 1947).

Repair job 8784. The original No. 124 movement was missing, so I bought a vintage movement (dated 5212 – December 1952) and repaired and installed it.

I straightened the second time arbor, polished the pivots, installed 28 bushings, made a new rack return spring, and closed the hole in the minute hand. The No. 124 is a very reliable movement provided that the bushings are carefully installed. Each pivot must protrude beyond the end of its bushing, or “tunneling” will occur as the clock wears.

The date on the instruction label (inside the back door) is 4713 (13th lunar month of 1947).
