Ansonia Brass & Copper Company 8 Day OG Clock

I recently repaired this 8 day OG clock made by Ansonia Brass and Copper Company, Ansonia, Connecticut. Clocks were made under this name from around 1869 to 1877.

This clock’s case is interesting in having separate upper and lower doors, most OG clocks have a single door. The clock is 30 1/4 inches tall, 15 15/16 inches wide, and 4 3/16 inches deep.

Repair job 8579. I polished or burnished the pivots and installed 13 bushings. I reversed the wires in pinion T4 and polished the pallets. The weights were missing and I found a pair of antique weights 7 pounds 11 ounces (for the striking – left side) and 8 pounds (for the time – right side). Perhaps up to a pound lighter would have worked OK too.

The suspension rod and pendulum bob were replacements. The replacement bob was from Germany and weighed 4 ounces, which seemed too heavy, and the pendulum did not make a good swing. I installed a replacement suspension rod with a .004 inch thick suspension spring, and found an antique bob 1 3/4″ diameter weighing 1.9 ounces, but the motion was still poor. I installed a rod with a .0035 inch thick spring, and surprisingly, the motion was very good!
